Agroforestry is ideally the practice of intentionally integrating trees and shrubs into animal and crop farming systems with the objective of creating and realizing environmental, social and economic benefits.
Although still considered a fairly new concept, cultivating trees and agricultural crops is an ancient practice that farmers have applied world over for ages.
We target planting crops between rows of trees to provide income while the trees mature. Our approach is designed to produce fruits, vegetables, grains, herbs, through agroforestry in communities.
Agroforestry guarantees reduction in further degradation, improvements and gains in agriculture, improved health & nutrition, diversified livelihoods, increased income streams for poor households.
Why agroforestry?
- It has the ability to control runoff and soil erosion, reducing organic matter, soil nutrients, soil & water loss.
- Maintains physical properties of soil better than agriculture, through organic matter maintenance & tree roots effects.
- It can augment soil water availability to land-use systems.
- Nitrogen-fixing trees & shrubs can significantly increase nitrogen inputs to agroforestry systems.
- Ability to reclaim eroded and degraded landscapes.
- Potential to provide diverse farm economy & stimulate rural economy, resulting in reduced poverty levels.
